Choosing a home-care agency is not like buying a product. You are entrusting someone — or a team of people — with the safety, dignity, and daily wellbeing of someone you love. That deserves more than a quick Google search and a phone call.

I always tell families: the quality of your questions determines the quality of the care you end up with. A good agency will welcome your questions. A poor one will deflect them. Use that response itself as part of your evaluation.

Here are the questions that matter most — and why.

1. Are You Registered and Accredited?

This is your starting point. Ask whether the agency is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and whether it operates in compliance with any relevant state health regulations. Registration does not guarantee excellence, but the absence of it is a significant red flag. Any agency operating professionally should be able to provide documentation without hesitation.

2. How Do You Hire and Vet Your Caregivers?

This question reveals everything about the agency's standards. Do they conduct background checks? Do they verify previous employment? Do caregivers undergo health screening before placement? What training do they receive — and how often is it updated? You want caregivers who have been properly screened, trained, and supervised. Not people who simply showed up looking for work.

3. What Happens If the Caregiver Is Sick or Unavailable?

Life happens. A caregiver may fall ill, have a family emergency, or simply not work out. A serious agency has a replacement protocol — a pool of trained backup caregivers who can step in without leaving your relative unsupported. If an agency cannot answer this question clearly, that is a problem you do not want to discover during an actual emergency.

4. How Do You Communicate With Families?

This is especially critical for diaspora families. Ask specifically: how often will we receive updates? Through what channel — phone calls, WhatsApp, written reports? Who is our point of contact, and how quickly do they respond to concerns? An agency that communicates proactively is worth significantly more than one you constantly have to chase.

5. What Is Included in the Fee — and What Is Not?

Get this in writing. Some agencies quote a base fee and then bill separately for transport, medical supplies, overtime, or holiday cover. Others offer comprehensive packages. Neither model is wrong — but you need to know exactly what you are paying for before you sign anything. Surprises in caregiving are never welcome.

6. Can We Speak With References?

Any agency confident in its work should be able to connect you with at least two or three families they have served. Speak to those families directly. Ask about their real experience — what went well, what was difficult, how the agency responded to problems. This one conversation can save you months of frustration.

7. How Do You Handle Medical Emergencies?

Find out exactly what the protocol is when a medical emergency occurs in the home. Do caregivers have basic first aid training? Is there a supervising nurse or medical professional on call? Which hospital does the agency recommend or partner with? How quickly can emergency support be mobilised? These are not hypothetical questions — they are practical realities of home care, and the agency's answers should give you genuine confidence, not vague reassurances.

Choosing the right agency takes time. But that time is one of the most valuable investments you can make for your relative's care and your own peace of mind. Ask boldly, listen carefully, and trust your instincts. The right agency will not make you feel like you are asking too much — because in this work, there is no such thing as too much care.
